The grandson of Leeds anti-violence campaigner Pat Regan has appeared in court charged with her murder. Rakiem Regan, 20, twitched and clutched his stomach throughout the hearing at Leeds Magistrates Court, where he was also charged with stabbing a 45-year-old rail worker.

Wearing a long-sleeved grey jumper and blue tracksuit bottoms, Regan spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth; but could be heard mumbling and groaning throughout his brief appearance.

Members of the Regan family were sat in the public gallery and listened as Regan, who appeared disorientated and unsteady on his feet, was charged with murder and wounding with intent.

Pat Regan, 53 - who spearheaded the Mothers Against Guns campaign after her son Danny was shot dead in 2002 - was found dead with stab wounds at her home in Marlborough Grange, near Leeds city centre, on Sunday.

Regan's solicitor, Grahame Stowe, told the court there were "some concerns" over his client's mental health, describing him as "quite poorly".

Regan was remanded in custody to Doncaster Prison and will appear at Leeds Crown Court on June 11. He will undergo a full psychiatric assessment at Doncaster.

Mr Stowe said his family are offering him support and standing by him.
